[Natural-dye & Hand-weave process] for only Haute couture

[天然染色と手織工程] - オートクチュール

1. [Post-dye for fabric]

      - We sometimes post-dye the fabric itself before sewing at a production site in Cambodia.

      - 製品に依り、生地の後染めをする場合もあります。その後、縫製に進みます。

Dyeing Materials

We make all-natural dyes using carefully selected plant matter to dye our thread. Absolutely no chemical dyes are used, and we are particular about using local natural resources such as wood and leaves taken from Cambodian plants. We obtain materials for dye from about 20 different types of plants. Because they are from actual plants, the dyes can be different from batch to batch, delivering inconceivably exquisite hues.

Dye Extraction and Dyeing

Natural charcoal (recycled charcoal) is used when boiling dyes in order to reduce the burden on the environment. Dye is extracted by placing the plant matter into a cauldron and boiling in water. Removing the plant matter after the dye has been extracted completes the process, start fabric-dyeing. The left-over plant matter is used for fertilizer etc. Also any dye left over from the dyeing process is reused as fertilizer. Since these materials are all natural they can be returned to nature easily. Of course, the process is easier and less expensive when chemical dyes are used, but the impact on the environment is not minor by any means. Here, we carry on with a traditional recycling-based production process without sparing time or labor. After dyeing, the fabric is dried, left for the color to set thoroughly, which completes the fabric pigmentation process. After that, we progress to sewing.

2. [Yarn dye & Hand-weave]

      - After dyeing process (replace to yarn-dyeing) as the above, goes to Hand-weave.

      - 製品に依り、先染め(上記工程のように染色対象を生地から糸に置き換えます)をした後に手織りで生地を作り、その後、縫製に進みます。

Setting for Warp-yarn on Hand-loom and Preparing Weft-yarn

Hand-loom is used to weave the yarn, and a long time is required to manually weave the yarn one at time. The fabric is made by weaving the weft yarn into the warp yarn. Firstly, the warp yarn is set into the loom. The width, length & texture of the fabric to be made is determined by the number, density & weaving way of warp yarn. After setting the warp yarn, the weft yarn are placed into a shuttle, the weaving process begins.

Stepping alternately on 2 foot-pedals at the base of loom, the warp yarn are separated vertically with up & down. The shuttle is passed through the space, then back again with changing step to weave the weft into the warp. Fabric is woven by repeating this process. Hours are needed to weave even 1 meter, demand the skill to be able to continue weaving for a long time with high ability to concentrate. Through the dyeing & weaving processes for long term, the finished product is born (almost scarf).
